Qualifications for New Instructors

Qualify as an instructor through any one of our versatile options.

To become an approved instructor, you must meet one of the options for qualification criteria by state-mandated course area. Apply through the instructor dashboard with your relevant qualification. Please be prepared to pay a $115 new instructor application fee as part of the application process.

Course Areas

Fire Safety

To qualify as a fire safety instructor, you must have at least two years' experience teaching or training adults, have completed six hours of instruction related to teaching and training or you are currently an American Red Cross instructor. In addition, you must meet ONE of the following options for qualification criteria:

1. Licensed Professional

You are certified by Wisconsin Technical College (WTC) Fire Service Certification Program (minimum Fire Fighter 1).

2. Train-the-Trainer

You are on the Registry as having completed a Registry-approved Train-the-Trainer course in fire safety. Search the Registry.

3. Accreditation

You are an instructor employed by WTC to teach at least one course within the accredited fire safety curriculum.

4. Experience

You have two years’ experience working full-time in a health care setting, and you are on the Registry as having completed fire safety with an approved instructor, and you list a consultant certified by WTC Fire Service Certification Program (minimum Fire Fighter 1). Search the Registry.

First Aid & Choking

To qualify as a first aid and choking instructor, you must have at least two years' experience teaching or training adults, have completed six hours of instruction related to teaching and training or you are currently an American Red Cross instructor. In addition, you must meet ONE of the following options for qualification criteria:

1. Licensed Professional

You are a physician, RN, LPN, NP, PA, Fire Fighter 1, EMT or paramedic, or you are certified by the American Red Cross/American Heart Association.

2. Train-the-Trainer

You are on the Registry as having completed a Registry-approved Train-the-Trainer course in first aid and choking. Search the Registry.

3. Accreditation

You are an instructor employed by WTC to teach at least one course within the accredited first aid and choking curriculum.

Standard Precautions

To qualify as a standard precautions instructor, you must have at least two years' experience teaching or training adults, have completed six hours of instruction related to teaching and training or you are currently an American Red Cross instructor. In addition, you must meet ONE of the following options for qualification criteria:

1. Licensed Professional

You are a physician, RN, NP, PA, LPN or registered pharmacist or you are certified by the American Red Cross/American Heart Association.

2. Train-the-Trainer

You are on the Registry as having completed a Registry-approved Train-the-Trainer course in standard precautions. Search the Registry.

3. Accreditation

You are certified in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and you are an instructor employed by WTC to teach at least one course in Standard Precautions (must include college name and HR contact) or you are an American Red Cross instructor in good standing of an American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens course.

4. Experience

You have two years’ experience working full-time in a health care setting, and you are on the Registry as having completed standard precautions with an approved instructor, and you list a licensed professional in good standing to act as a consultant. These classes must be taught exclusively by you, and your consultant cannot submit an evaluation on a class that you co-taught.  (The consultant must observe and complete a written evaluation of the first class you teach under this approval and one training annually thereafter.) Medication Administration

To qualify as a Medication Administration instructor, you must have at least two years' experience teaching or training adults, have completed six hours of instruction related to teaching and training or you are currently an American Red Cross instructor. In addition, you must meet ONE of the following options for qualification criteria:

1. Licensed Professional

You are a physician, registered pharmacist, RN, NP or PA.

2. Train-the-Trainer

You are on the Registry as having completed a Registry-approved Train-the-Trainer course in medication administration, and you list a licensed professional in good standing to act as a consultant. These classes must be taught exclusively by you, and your consultant cannot submit an evaluation on a class that you co-taught. (The consultant must observe and complete a written evaluation of the first class you teach under his approval and one training annually thereafter.) Search the Registry.

3. Accreditation

You are an instructor employed by WTC to teach at least one course in the medication administration curriculum.
