The LGBFR AOC is one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the Great Lakes, but it's also one of the most susceptible to habitat loss, water pollution and invasive species. Despite human impact, nearly 42% of the land in the LGBFR AOC is capable of supporting ecological communities. Building on decades of effort, we've worked on important projects to help enhance the LGBFR AOC.

Project Documents

  • AOC Metrics Plan / User Guide (Version October 2020): provides guidance and instruction on:
    • assessing fish and wildlife habitats and populations before and after restoration work
    • how to use MS Excel tools
    • how to implement our priority habitat and population metrics, which convert newly collected field data into condition scores ranging from 0 to 10
    • tracking progress towards the removal of each fish and wildlife BUI.
  • UW-Green Bay's Final Report: Part 1 (2018): formulates recommendations for restoring fish and wildlife habitats and populations and provides an objective, quantitative mechanism for tracking progress toward a condition where removal of these BUIs can be justified.
  • The Nature Conservancy's Final Report: Part 2 (2018): contains The Nature Conservancy’s assessment of the LFRGB AOC.
  • Journal of Great Lakes Research manuscript: Howe et al. (2018): provides a transparent, quantitative process for setting targets to remove two fish and wildlife-related beneficial use impairments (BUIs).
  • 2014 Scope of Work: outlines Phase 1 of the LGBFR AOC Fish and Wildlife Habitat and Populations Assessment, which focused on finding, organizing and evaluating existing data related to fish and wildlife habitat and populations in the area
  • 2016 Scope of Work: outlines Phase 2 of the LGBFR AOC Fish and Wildlife Habitat and Populations Assessment, which focused on historical conditions, habitat dynamics and restoration opportunities within the designated AOC boundary.
  • 2016 Quality Assurance Project Plan: provides detailed project plan for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project.
