COFRIN LIBRARY HISTORY
A Storied
History
Each building writes a chapter in our growth.
Though the location has changed throughout the years, the library has always served as a resource of information and research opportunities; as a meeting space to connect our community; and as an educational resource for the region.
Library History
UW-Green Bay's library was central to the University since its inception.
ca. 1965-69 - Deckner Center Library
When UW-Green Bay first opened, it was a 2-year campus located on Deckner Avenue where the present-day Anne Sullivan School stands. It had a final fall enrollment of 931, making it the largest two-year center in Wisconsin.
ca. 1969-70 - Temporary Location
The temporary home of the campus library was housed on the second floor of Schmitt’s Discount Department Store located at 1276 Main Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
ca. 1969-1971 - IS Building Library
The library used to be housed in the Instructional Services building. Here's an interior photo that shows a view of the reference area, looking east and students studying.

Ground is broken for the second major construction project: a $6.4 million Library-Learning Center.
Fall 1970 - Construction
The Library Learning Center was taking shape in fall 1970. It would later be renamed the David A. Cofrin Library in fall 1990.
Feb 1972 - Move-In
Library staff members begin transferring books from the Instructional Services Building to the Library Learning Center. Officials of the Wisconsin State Historical Society establish an Area Research Center in the special collections department of the library.
April 1972 - Open House
A bold, brutalist architectural statement takes its bow on the campus center stage. More than 1,700 visitors tour the library during an open house that follows a dedication ceremony.
