Empowering
Civic Leaders

Students as agents of social change.

Civic engagement is crucial for developing well-rounded students who are motivated to make a difference in their communities. At UW-Green Bay, we integrate culturally relevant pedagogy, a theory presented by Gloria Ladson-Billings from UW-Madison. The goal of this pedagogy is to turn teaching into action. Taking these concepts into consideration, we want to develop our teachings in a meaningful manner so that students not only care about what they are learning, they take what they learn and bring it to their communities as well. What does this mean for you? Include your students in decision making! Let them choose what project or what community organization matters to them. Show them that you are invested in them as an individual.

Fundamentals of Community-Based Teaching

This pedagogy will guide your perspective of student goals and values in your course. Thinking about the student as an individual, then as a citizen, will allow you to give students the space they need to grow.

Academic Success

According to the AAC&U, students who are actively involved in both the classroom and the community tend to stay on strong academic paths, graduate, and often pursue higher education, becoming future community leaders.

Develop Cultural Competence

Using a variety of cultures in your teaching means students are exposed to people and customs different to their own. The importance? Students develop cultural competence to connect to people around the world.

Anti-Racist Teaching

Critical Consciousness

As AI use increases and technology develops, the ability to critically think for yourself will become essential. Through critical consciousness, students develop the ability to apply knowledge outside the academic contexts and analyze society.

Hear From Our
Partners

"Aside from the work that they assist us to complete, having an intern join our staff is a great way for us to see our organization through their eyes. We value the opportunity to learn from a younger demographic and appreciate the connectivity to the university."
