Questions
With a large variety of majors and minors to choose from, there is no doubt that you will have questions. Below is a list of common questions and answers from students.
A major is a field of study or specialization which forms the primary focus of a student’s academic program. A major is made up of required and elective courses that provide in-depth knowledge and expertise in a particular subject area.
A minor is a secondary field of study that supplements the major. Minors allow students to explore an additional area of interest outside of their major, providing a basic understanding and knowledge in that particular subject.
The main difference between a major and a minor is the level of emphasis and depth of study. The major is the primary area of focus and requires a significant number of courses, while the minor is a secondary area of interest and requires fewer courses.
You can begin choosing a major and/or minor by personal interests or areas of study that you help in pursue a future career. After finding an area of study that is right for you, contact an advisor or specialist at UW-Green Bay to help make that decision possible.
Minors can provide several benefits and opportunities for college students. Minors can broaden knowledge and skills, enhance career prospects, Integrate multiple studies, and dive deeper into personal subjects.
The point of a minor is to define a secondary area of emphasis to your major that closer explains your knowledge of certain subject areas for employers and other people in the job market.
For some students, a minor may align closely with their career aspirations or provide a competitive advantage in the job market. However, it's important to consider the time and coursework requirements of pursuing a minor, as it may impact the overall workload and time needed to complete the degree.
Declaring a major early on has several benefits. By declaring a major early on you can start taking courses specific to your targeted study and helps with future academic planning. Job opportunities and internships become more available the sooner you declare a major. Scholarships for your study also become more available the sooner you declare a major.
Opportunities such as student organizations, honor societies, internships, and departmental activities become available the moment you decide. Relieving your stress by having a plan makes your college experience all the better.
