Clear Track to a Life-Saving Career
From day one, you’re on the path to certification in cytotechnology.
If you love looking into a microscope and want to be at the forefront of disease diagnosis, our program offers you a clear path to a career in health care. With courses and clinical experiences directly tied to what you’ll do as a cytotechnologist, you’re on track to become certified and start your career.
What is Cytotechnology?
Despite the importance of cytotechnology, many people haven’t even heard of the term. Cytotechnologists, also known as cytologists, act as the first line of defense, screening cells for signs of cancer and other abnormalities. Whether examining cells from a Pap smear or other test, cytotechnology is the microscopic study of cells primarily for detection of cancer.
Multifaceted
Because we’re a part of the human biology major, you'll develop skills used throughout the study of human health and disease and become a well-rounded scientist.
High Quality, Low Cost
You'll get a quality education with hands-on experience that's an unbeatable value.
Experience Built in
For your fourth year, you’ll complete a clinical internship with top-rated training.
You’ll first complete 92 credits, including all general education requirements, and then take an 11-month, 32-credit clinical internship at Mayo Clinic. As world-famous institutions, both places offer hands-on experiences that prepare you to be certified as a cytotechnologist.
Examine Our Emphasis
Though you can't exactly use a microscope to further dissect our program, you can explore more about what makes up the science of cytotechnology.
Major Benefits
As an emphasis within the human biology major, cytotechnology students get access to resources like lab facilities, research opportunities and expert professors.
Hands-On Learning
With dedicated facilities geared toward human biology as a whole, we also feature specific opportunities for cytotechnology. In fact, we have human cancer cells growing in culture in our lab to give you the chance to put your skills to the test.
Study On
Located on the second floor of the Environmental Sciences Building, the Science Study Lounge offers a space designed to study either with peers or on your own.
