Voting Procedures

Learn how to participate in the upcoming election by reviewing eligibility requirements, steps to register and information about documents needed.

Who Can Vote

You are eligible to vote in Wisconsin if you meet all of the following criteria:

  1. You are a U.S. citizen
  2. You will be 18 years of age on or before Election Day
  3. You have resided in Wisconsin for at least 28 consecutive days before election day

Where to Vote

Eligible voters must vote at a specific polling station (ward) which is determined by the location of your current address. The Polling Stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

How to Register to Vote

There are four ways to register to vote in Wisconsin:

  1. Online up to 20 days before the election
  2. Sending forms in by mail more than 20 days prior to the election
  3. In person more than 20 days prior to the election at the municipal clerk's office
  4. At your Polling Station on Election Day

Who Needs to Register

You will need to re-register to vote if:

  • If you have moved in to a new address or changed apartment numbers
  • You have changed your legal name since the last time you voted
  • You are a first-time voter
Important note: If you have been issued a WI driver license or WI DOT-issued ID that is current and valid, you must provide the number and expiration date. If your WI driver license is revoked, suspended or expired; or your WI DOT-issued ID is expired, provide the number and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If you have not been issued a WI driver license or WI DOT-issued ID, you must provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If you have none of these documents, you will be able to indicate that fact.

What You Need to Register

To register to vote in Wisconsin, you will need documentation that proves your place of residence in Wisconsin.  This can be either a paper copy of one of the acceptable forms listed below, or an electronic version displayed on a smart phone or computer to prove residency. 

If completing your voter registration online at myvote.wi.gov, a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license or Wisconsin Identification Card will be needed as well.  

Acceptable proofs of current residence include:

Preferred
  • A printed copy of the Voter ID Verification form.
  • A current and valid Wisconsin driver's license or Wisconsin identification card with current address.
Accepted
  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit
  • An identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business, which has a photograph of the cardholder, but not a business card.
  • A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
  • A current residential lease.
  • A UW-Green Bay Campus ID with a photograph of the cardholder, accompanied by a fee statement for the current semester.
  • A utility bill for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before the election. (printed copy of online bill ok)
  • A bank statement. (printed copy of online statement ok)
  • A paycheck.
  • A check or other document issued by a unit of government, including the University of Wisconsin.
  • A printed copy of your current bursar's statement.

In lieu of a paper copy, individuals may present an electronic display on a smartphone or computer of a qualifying document to prove their address for residency verification.

How to Obtain Voter ID address via SIS

You must provide a Proof of Residence Document when registering to vote in Wisconsin. A Proof of Residence Document is a document that proves where you live in Wisconsin. This information can be accessed via SIS.

Six Easy Steps

  1. Log in to SIS.
  2. Go to the Student Center.
  3. Under the "Student Links" section, select "Voter ID Verification."
  4. Make sure to update your address if needed.
  5. Check to ensure all information is correct, then click the "Enrollment and Address Verify" link.
  6. Keep this verification as proof of current address when registering to vote.
