Training & Certification Process
Step 1 - Virtual Training
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides virtual classroom and self-study training options using IRS prepared training material. The training and material are free: access the online training modules. IRS publications and additional resources are available to help you prepare for the certification exam:
- Publication 4012 - Volunteer Resource Guide: Offers tax preparation aids and directions on how to navigate our online TaxSlayer software.
- Publication 4961 - Volunteer Standards of Conduct (Ethics) Training
- Publication 5101 - Intake/Interview and Quality Review Training
- Form 6744 - VITA/TCE Volunteer Assistor’s Test/Retest. Use this form to work out the test questions ahead of time before certifying online.
- TaxSlayer Practice Lab: Helps you with prepared tax returns using difference tax scenarios in practice mode.
Step 2 - Certification Process
we require all volunteers to pass the following three certification tests and get certified annually:
1. Volunteer Standards of Conduct exam
2. Intake/Interview Quality Review exam
3. Advanced Tax Preparation exam
Upon completion of certification tests through Link & Learn, sign, date and submit Form 13615 to vita@uwgb.edu.
A Profitable
Experience
"It can be difficult to apply concepts from a lecture to a real world setting. But VITA allowed us to fill that gap by working directly with clients to answer their questions and file their tax returns properly."
