Tax Filing for International Students
If you earned income in the U.S. during the past year:
Your must report your earnings to the IRS (Form 1040-NR) and state government (e.g., Form 1NPR in Wisconsin) in addition to filing Form 8843. The following are common sources of income and their corresponding tax forms:
Paid employment (Form W-2)
- Teaching or graduate assistantships
- On-campus or off-campus employment
- Optional Practical Training/Curricular Practical Training
Fellowships, scholarships, or grants from a U.S. source for living or travel expenses (Form 1042-S)
Dividends or capital gains from U.S. mutual funds, stocks, or bonds (Form 1099-DIV or Form 1099-B)
Any other income, awards, prizes, or royalties from U.S. sources.
Interest earned on a U.S. checking or savings account or Certificates of Deposit (CD) are generally not taxable for non-residents.
