Why attend skills clinics & events?

Outdoor skills clinics and events are an excellent low-risk opportunity for you to try something new and see if you like it. Or, if you've done it before and know you like it, it's a chance to do what you enjoy. They all take place on or near campus, require minimal commitment on your part, and if it's not for you, you've lost very little. And you can say you tried!

Skills Clinics

Hone your outdoor skills (or learn new ones!) with UREC Outdoors skills clinics. For each of the skills clinics below, UREC Outdoors will provide equipment and basic instruction to all participants.

Climbing Movement 1 Class

Learn the basics of climbing movement and gain skills further your climbing abilities. Find out how you can conserve energy, avoid upper-body strain, apply footwork, employ climbing styles, read your route and more!

Disc Golf UWGB

Calling all disc golf enthusiasts (or curious newbies!) This is your chance to hit the Shorewood Disc Golf Course for a fun-filled afternoon of flicking discs. Whether you're a seasoned pro or haven't a clue where the basket is, we've got you covered. Come meet us right outside the Shorewood Center—we'll provide pointers and even have discs to borrow if you need them. Let's get discing!

Paddle Shorewood Park

Join us for this basic flat-water paddling clinic where we'll cover the fundamental how-to's of kayaking and canoeing. Learn paddling techniques, basic risk management and everything you need to feel confident paddling a lake or calm river. No experience necessary! This clinic is perfect for those curious about paddling and anyone who wants to spend time on the water!

UREC Sea Kayaking Skills Clinic

Intro to Sea Kayaking

Want to paddle on the open water? Kayaking large bodies of water like the Bay of Green Bay or Lake Michigan take different skills and equipment than paddling the flat water of rivers and lakes. This introductory class teaches you the fundamentals of sea kayaking in a managed, calm environment. Learn essential skills like paddling techniques and risk mitigation procedures, all in the beautiful protected waters near UW-Green Bay.

UREC Outdoord rock climbing adventure trip

Lead Climb & Belay Class

Looking to further your climbing skills, or maybe take the “leap” to outdoor climbing? This class is for you! Learn the principles of lead climbing and belaying from UREC Outdoors Staff. Expand your skills or learn what you need to get outside! Lead climbing is an essential skill for setting outdoor sport climbs or engaging in lead climbing at your favorite indoor facility. Learn principles of belaying for lead, clipping, and what to avoid in lead climbing in this class! 1–2 months of climbing experience recommended, Top Rope Belay Certification required.

Top Rope Belay Class

Tired of waiting on staff to belay or want to start a “belaytionship” with your favorite climbing partner? This class is for you! Learn to tie your figure-8 follow through knot, how to belay using an ATC and GriGri, and become self-reliant at the climbing tower! Taking this class allows you to start the process of becoming certified to belay at the UREC Climbing Tower during tower hours.
