White People Came
When I was young I would hear them telling stories. One man told this story of a woman who they say had a dream that she saw something floating on the ocean. And there were trees and something white moving about. It was coming toward where the Oneidas live. It was going to swallow up where they lived. When she had told that much, the woman died. The chiefs thought about it quite a bit, but they did not figure out what was the meaning of what she dreamt. Several years later the white people arrived. Then they figured out what was the meaning of what she had dreamt many years before.
