Essential Job Functions

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Housing and Residential Education department welcomes your application for consideration for a Custodian Lead position. In this important role, you will make an impact on our students, faculty and staff by maintaining the overall appearance and cleanliness of your designated work area by manually cleaning and maintaining the UW-Green Bay housing and residential facilities. This includes but is not limited to cleaning housing and residential facilities, removing waste and recycling, and monitoring building security to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in assigned areas. Leads the custodial work of others and responds to custodial emergencies.  This position also oversees student staff, administrative duties, inventory, and cleaning. Cleaning includes common areas, occupied and unoccupied student rooms and apartments as well as occasional office spaces, and snow removal and salting of building entrances. This position will be required to drive a State vehicle and travel between work on-campus locations as needed.

What You'll Do

  • Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables.
  • Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities.
  • Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed.
  • Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs.
  • Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice.
  • Schedules, monitors, and communicates with staff and assists with basic training.
  • Responds to facility emergency and hazardous situations, and escalates incidents according to established policies and procedures.
  • Administrative Duties: Each lead will have primary administrative duties that they will be responsible to manage.  Leads will also be cross trained in all areas.
    • Inventory and ordering
    • Recruitment, hiring, training and supervising student staff 
    • Scheduling and managing departure/arrival cleans and oversee all areas of managing contract cleaners
    • Management, review, and follow up of work orders

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent at time of application
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use e-mail and internet

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual, preferably in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, or Oneida
  • StarRez Software (Housing Management System), Total Maintenance Authority (TMA), and Persona electronic door access software
  • Knowledge of the proper methods, materials, and equipment for a wide range of general custodian work
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as a vacuum cleaner or a floor scrubber
  • Knowledge of basic safety precautions including the safe and proper use of toxic chemicals, and knowledge of heaving lifting methods to ensure safety
  • Must have the ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness
  • Ability to tolerate temperature extremes when performing snow removal activities

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Physical abilities to lift 50 lbs. from the floor to waist occasionally
  • Physical abilities to lift 30 lbs. from the floor to overhead occasionally
  • Physical abilities to stand and walk continuously throughout an eight hour shift
  • Ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, move furniture, perform repetitive motions, overhead work, frequent stair and ladder climbing

Conditions of Appointment

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment.  The work hours for this position will be 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s).  In addition, if the final selected candidate has prior work history within the last 7 years with Universities of Wisconsin, a personnel file review check for employee misconduct will be completed. A six-month probationary period is required for this position. In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the University does not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record.

When obtaining employment reference checks, these same misconduct, sexual violence or sexual harassment questions must also be asked.

Compensation and Benefits

SALARY INFORMATION

Minimum hourly wage of $18.50. 

This position will earn an additional $0.80 per hour for all weekend hours worked, as well as for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

BENEFIT DETAILS

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts. We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
