Workshop Modules

Originally a face-to-face virtual class, this workshop has been adapted to an asynchronous format. It consists of six modules and uses a blended learning approach, including lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises. Participants will engage in realistic scenarios to apply the strategies they learn, gaining a comprehensive understanding of grant writing for government and nonprofit organizations.

Upon completion, participants will have the foundational knowledge and skills to assess organizational readiness, identify suitable projects for funding, build effective relationships with funders, and craft compelling grant proposals. These skills are essential for the sustainability and growth of government and nonprofit organizations.

Analyzing Your Organization to See if It Is Ready to Pursue a Grant

Module 1

Understand the components of an organization, including its mission, purpose (vision), goals, financial procedures, staff, technology, resources, and infrastructure. You will evaluate organizational readiness for pursuing grants and learn how to obtain a commitment from organizational leadership to meet grant goals. 

The Types of Grants to Pursue

Module 2

Identify and differentiate various types of grants to determine which type best suits your funding pursuits.

Identifying a Problem or Project for Funding

Module 3

Identify problems or projects suitable for funding, focusing on compatibility, uniqueness, needs to be addressed, and support identification. We will identify potential funding sources and discuss databases such as GuideStar, community foundations, and internet searches.

Relationship Building

Module 4

Emphasize the importance of relationship building with funders. Practice effective communication strategies, including letters of inquiry, formal engagement, and follow-up techniques.

Keys for Success

Module 5

Understand key success factors in pursuing grants. You will also develop skills in documenting unmet needs, researching funders, and targeting purposes.


Typical Aspects of a Grant Proposal

Module 6

Understand the components of a grant proposal and learn how to effectively write an application letter, abstract, organizational background, goals and objectives, methods, evaluation, budget, timeline, and conclusion.

Kerry focuses on issues at the intersection of public and nonprofit management and collaborative governance. Her recent publications are about the career trajectories of nonprofit executives and nonprofit management education. She earned her Ph.D. in public affairs.
