Progressive Curriculum
The Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Institute (CTI) consists of a minimum three-year progressive curriculum of classroom instruction that takes place virtually during a concentrated week every summer. There are tracks for clerks, clerk towns, treasurers and alumni. Each year represents approximately 32-34 hours of training.
After three years, clerks and treasurers graduate from the Institute, acquiring 100 hours of professional development. If you are a clerk and treasurer, you should take the track for which you need the most training. Once graduated, you can take the track for your other role.
We recommend graduates continue with additional tracks or advanced training like our Master Academy for Civic and Public Affairs or Election Academy. We offer the most practical and cutting-edge education for clerks and treasurers.
Hands-on Learning
Enhance your technical skills, administrative expertise, leadership capabilities and financial management through an engaging blend of lectures, interactive discussions and practical exercises.
Tailored Training Tracks
With four tailored training tracks, we cater to your current level of expertise. Each track becomes progressively more expansive, guiding you through state-of-the-art topics as you advance year by year.
Valuable Resources
We evaluate your mastery of the material using an essential toolkit of case studies, exercises and reference materials, all of which you can take with you for future use.
Peer Connections
We offer both formal and informal networking opportunities, allowing you to connect with peers. These relationships and the exchange of ideas foster greater confidence and improved performance.
Why Attend?
CTI offers a diverse array of educational sessions covering a broad spectrum of topics for clerks and treasurers, such as leadership, communication, organizational development, collaboration, diversity and inclusion and more. If you need help advocating for the budget to attend, we offer a form letter that you can adapt to your particular circumstances.
Hear from Graduates of CTI
Past graduates share their thoughts on the value and long-term benefits of attending the Clerks and Treasurers Institute.
Tim McCumber
Town of Merrimac
"I think it's a great program. The clerk role has become so complicated with election laws and other changes. It's a big asset for any community to consider sending their clerks to the Institute."
Karen Weinschrott
Town of Grand Chute
"I was an appointed clerk without any experience and without any education about the profession. Coming to the Institute has allowed me to gain the education from experienced trainers and take that back to my community."
Kami Lynch
City of Verona
"It's not just a week of going through classes. You get a binder of material. You always have that knowledge. It's also the people you meet—a great way to meet people from other municipalities and share information."
Diane Hermann-Brown
City of Sun Prairie
Past WMCA President
"The Institute offers specialized education that's specific to our position and communities. It's an investment in that position. The more knowledge you can give that position the better your municipal, the clerk's office, will function."
