What Every Student Should Know

  1. FERPA allows a student to know what is in their education records by written request and to request a change. This law also defines what information can be released from a student's record and at what times it may be released.
  2. While the university does release directory information on a regular basis, the student has the right to opt out of that disclosure by submitting a restriction request form.
  3. The most common reason's the university releases information other than directory information is:
    1. To parents in connection with a student health or safety emergency. Examples would be a trip to an emergency room for an unknown problem, detoxification, or emergency detention.
    2. To parents of an eligible student if the student is a dependent for IRS tax purposes.
    3. To parents of a student regarding the student's violation of any Federal, State, or local law, or of any campus policy governing the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance if the school determines the student committed a disciplinary violation and the student is under the age of 21. FERPA does not pertain to records held by the UWGB Public Safety department.
    4. To officials of another school where the student seeks or intends to enroll, or where the student is already enrolled if the disclosure is for purposes related to the student's enrollment or transfer.
    5. To appropriate officials in connection with a health or safety emergency.
