Parental Notifications
"Parent" means a parent of a student and includes a natural parent, a guardian, or an individual acting as a parent in the absence of a parent or a guardian.
The university is limited as to how much and when the university can disclose information from a student's education records. They are:
- In connection with a student health or safety emergency. Examples would be a trip to an emergency room for an unknown problem, detoxification, or emergency detention.
- To parents of an eligible student if the student is a dependent for IRS tax purposes. Tax documentation must be presented re: dependency status to university officials before information can be shared.
- To parents of a student regarding the student's violation of any Federal, State, or local law, or of any campus policy governing the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance if the school determines the student committed a disciplinary violation and the student is under the age of 21. FERPA does not pertain to records held by the UWGB Public Safety department.
Please note the university is not required to release this information, but will weigh the student's right to privacy prior to the release of information.
A student can sign a FERPA Release at any time to identify the specific record information they want released to a parent or other third party. This release can have a specific expiration date or be in place until rescinded in writing or until no longer enrolled, whichever comes first. The release is available on our forms page.
