Parents
"Parent" includes a biological parent, a guardian or an individual acting as a parent in the absence of a parent or a guardian.
We are limited as to how much information we can disclose and when we can disclose it from a student's education records. Instances where we can disclose information are:
- in connection with a student health or safety emergency (Examples would be a trip to an emergency room for an unknown problem, detoxification or emergency detention.)
- if the student is a dependent for IRS tax purposes. Tax documentation must be presented regarding dependency status to university officials before information can be shared.
- regarding a student's alcohol or drug violation of any Federal, State or local law, or of any campus policy, if the school determines the student committed a disciplinary violation and the student is under the age of 21. FERPA does not pertain to records held by the UW-Green Bay University Police Department.
Please note, the university is not required to release this information but will weigh the student's right to privacy prior to the release of information.
A student can sign a FERPA release at any time to identify the specific record information they want released to a parent or other third party. This release can have a specific expiration date or be in place until rescinded in writing or until no longer enrolled, whichever comes first.
Grades
Grades are protected by FERPA. If you would like to see your student's grades, ask them to log into their SIS account and review their semester record and/or academic transcript together. Grades are not sent to the student either by mail or email.
A student may sign a release allowing a university official to verify grades earned to their parent for a specific semester or course; however, if a full reporting of grades is desired, the student should print their unofficial transcript from SIS or request an unofficial/official transcript from the Registrar's Office.
Expectations for Faculty
Parents have a wide variety of expectations for faculty. But faculty can't do everything. For example, they can't share grades or attendance with a parent. If you are concerned about how your student is doing academically, invited them to access resources like the Learning Center, Dean of Students or Wellness Center for issues such as test anxiety or homesickness. After that conversation, it is up to the student as to what gets reported back to the parent. Note, medical records fall under HIPAA, not FERPA.
Student Billing Information
Students are able to grant people access to their SIS account for student billing information and payments. This makes it easier for you to directly make online payments.
Misconduct
The Dean of Students takes an educational approach to misconduct to reduce the risk of repeat behavior.
