Teaching with Technology Certificate
This three-course, self-paced certificate helps you build skills to enhance your teaching with Canvas and other educational tools. Whether you’re teaching in-person, online or hybrid courses, this program offers practical strategies to improve student engagement and streamline course design. Each course builds on the previous one, starting with LITE 101 (an introduction to UWGB’s modalities and tech), followed by LITE 201 (course design) and concluding with LITE 301 (course revisions). Complete all three courses to earn the certificate—and full-time instructors may qualify for stipends along the way.

Canvas Course Types & Workflow
In Canvas, courses fall into four main types: sandbox, instructional, professional development and continuing education. Courses will appear on your dashboard based on their type and access settings.
Sandbox Courses
Sandbox courses—also called "blank" or "master" courses—aren't connected to SIS and don't contain students. They're intended for course development, experimentation and content preparation. UW-Green Bay instructors can create a new sandbox course anytime.
Instructional Courses
Instructional courses are generated 75 days before the term begins and students are added automatically from SIS. Instructors can import content from sandbox courses into these “live” courses for use in teaching.
Professional Development
Professional development courses are used for UW-Green Bay community trainings and shared learning. They're available to instructors and staff as needed.
Continuing Education
UW-Green Bay's Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training creates and manages Canvas courses for their large catalog of professional trainings and certificates. These courses aren't linked to SIS. Those who don't have a UWGB login must use an alternate login page.
Canvas Mobile App
The Canvas Teacher mobile app helps instructors manage courses on the go, offering tools to view the progress of your class on an assignment, communicate with students and update content from a smartphone or tablet. It's ideal for quick tasks, such as checking announcements and answering student questions. However, for tasks requiring more detailed functionality—like building course content, setting up modules and configuring gradebook settings—the desktop version of Canvas is recommended.
Tool-Specific Support
Need help with another instructional tool in the Digital Learning Environment? Use this list to find out about the best places to get support for a specific tool. If you can't find your tool on this list and don't know where to go, please contact the GBIT Service Desk at 920-465-2309 or open a ticket in the self-service portal. An IT technician will point you in the right direction or route your question to the correct team. Check the operational status of Canvas and other learning tools on our Outages & Updates page.
Kaltura (Video Tools)
Kaltura offers a suite of video tools to help you create and integrate video content into your Canvas courses. Use My Media, Course Media Galleries, Video Quizzes, Kaltura Capture and Kaltura Classroom to enhance student engagement through multimedia. Find answers to common questions in the UKnowIT KnowledgeBase, and direct technical support inquiries to the GBIT Service Desk. For advice and best practices on using Kaltura effectively in your teaching, explore the CATL Teaching Toolbox or request a consultation.
Zoom (Virtual Meetings)
The Universities of Wisconsin Zoom contract includes "Premiere+" support, providing prompt assistance directly through the Zoom Help Center. Instructors can submit support requests via web form or start a support chat from the Zoom portal, where an AI bot initially assists and can quickly connect you to a live agent if needed. CATL also offers consultations to help you run engaging, effective synchronous online sessions with Zoom. For tips and teaching strategies, check out Zoom in CATL's Teaching Toolbox.
PlayPosit (Interactive Video)
PlayPosit lets you create interactive video experiences to increase engagement. Access help articles and resources on the PlayPosit Knowledge site, or contact support directly through their Help Line form. CATL can guide you in using PlayPosit to enhance your courses—check the Teaching Toolbox for resources and reach out for personalized advice.
Hypothesis (Collaborative Notes)
Hypothesis enables collaborative annotation and discussion within Canvas. Find guides on Hypothesis in the UKnowIT KnowledgeBase and the Hypothesis Help site. For tips on incorporating Hypothesis into your teaching, explore CATL's Teaching Toolbox or schedule a consultation by emailing CATL. Technical issues can be reported via the Hypothesis Help Request form.
Honorlock (Online Proctoring)
Honorlock is designed to provide a more secure testing environment for distance education courses within Canvas. It carries a fee per student and per exam. Honorlock must be set up by a Canvas administrator—complete the Integration Request Form to add it to your course. Review the Honorlock User Guide for Instructors in the UKnowIT KnowledgeBase for instructions. For technical help, the Honorlock Support Center offers guides, and their team provides support through phone, chat, or email. Remind students they can access live chat support during their exams if needed.
Microsoft 365 (Office Suite)
Microsoft 365 offers a comprehensive set of tools to support virtual collaboration, productivity, and learning. This suite includes applications like Teams for online meetings and group projects, OneDrive for file storage and sharing, Word and Excel for document creation and data analysis, and PowerPoint for presentations. UWGB IT provides support for all Microsoft 365 applications, with guides available in the KnowledgeBase.
Request External Tools
Certain external tools, like digital badges, Cengage, Honorlock or McGraw-Hill Connect require integration by a Canvas administrator before they can be used. To request a tool integration, complete the Integration Request Form.
