Course Description

The session will focus on identifying who/what is a veteran, provide an overview of state programs and other veteran specific resources across the state of WI. The session will cover suicide statistics and specific considerations to keep in mind when working with veterans and service members. Harm reduction and the Gun Shop project will be reviewed as it relates to veterans. Lastly, attention will be given to best practice approaches to prevent suicide and address veterans’ whole-health recovery needs.

Learning Objectives:
• After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify who/what is a veteran.
• After participating in this session, attendees should be able to understand the impact of the issue of veteran suicide, comorbid conditions, and other aspects of military culture.
• After participating in this session, attendees should be able to have a general understanding of best practice approaches for veteran suicide prevention and whole health recovery.
• After participating in this session, attendees should have a general understanding of veteran specific resources and programs across the state.
• After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify harm reduction strategies including safe storage programs for lethal means safety.

About the Trainer

Joshua Andreini, MSW, LCSW

Joshua Andreini, MSW, LCSW

Josh Andreini is currently employed by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs as a Clinical Coordinator. Josh served in the military from 2007-2011 and deployed twice to Iraq. Upon fulfilling his military obligation, Josh achieved his BSW and MSW degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. Josh has worked in community mental health and non-for-profit agencies for several years prior to coming to WDVA. As a clinical therapist, Josh provided therapeutic interventions including DBT and EMDR to a diverse population including those underserved and with limited access to services. Josh has provided internal and external training presentations on topics such as trauma informed care and crisis intervention best practices.
