Course Description

Farmers and Ranchers have suicide death rates 2-3.5 times higher than the general population. This session will dive into the risk factors that are inherent to the work as an agricultural producer, warning signs that indicate someone may be having thoughts of suicide, and strategies to intervene and get help for the individual. We will also discuss suicide prevention strategies through the building of protective factors.

Learning Objectives:

  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify warning signs in ag producers.
  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to have an understanding of what drives stress in the ag population.
  • After participating in this session, attendees should be able to identify the role of protective factors in preventing suicide.

Monica McConkey, LPC

Monica McConkey has 30 years of experience in the behavioral health field as a counselor, program supervisor and administrator. She currently works as one of two Ag Mental Health Counselors in Minnesota providing support to farmers, ranchers and their families.  She is the owner of Eyes on the Horizon Consulting, a business through which she focuses on helping individuals and organizations increase resilience and mental wellness.
