Course Description

You've probably heard that dentists have a high rate of suicide, maybe even the highest in the country, but why would that be? Is it even true? In this lecture, we'll delve into the facts and figures surrounding dentistry, and why good mental health is such an important, and perhaps overlooked aspect of the career.

Learning Objectives:

  • Have a better understanding of why dentists may have poor mental health
  • Know some of the factors that lead to burnout and stress in dentistry
  • Have a better understanding of who dentists are as mental health patients

Woodstock Tom, DMD, Assistant Professor In Residence

Dr. Woodstock Tom is a dentist with 7 years of private practice experience and 3 years of academic experience (Assistant Professor teaching dental students at UNLV School of Dental Medicine). Dr. Tom is a safeTALK suicide prevention trainer, and has presented the 3.5 hour safeTALK course to students/faculty/staff of the dental school, as well as to outside organizations. He lectures on the topic of Dentistry and Mental Health to 2nd and 3rd year dental students, and he also presented to participants of the 2024 American Association of Suicidology annual meeting.

Mageena Tom, LCSW

~7 years of experience working for Rawson-Neal psychiatric hospital, much of that time spent as part of the mobile crisis unit. Major job responsibilities included certifying or decertifying legal holds, often after suicidal acts, or psychotic episodes. Total of ~12 years of experience as a social worker.
