Course Description

The prevalence of eating disorders in on the rise. Research indicates that the incidence of eating disorders are on the rise, yet very few individuals struggling with eating disorders ever get treatment. Mental health and healthcare professionals are often in a position to identify eating disorders and refer them for care but often times have limited knowledge and training in this area. We know that early detection and intervention are correlated with better outcomes. This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of eating disorders including eating disorders diagnoses, common cooccurring disorders, screening and referral parameters and current best practice in the treatment of eating disorders.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify warning signs and symptoms of eating disorders
• Describe the primary eating disorder diagnoses: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, other specified feeding and eating disorder
• Learn how to screen for eating disorders & when to refer someone for an eating disorder assessment
• List current evidence-based treatments and best practice in eating disorder care

Heather Gallivan

Heather Gallivan, PsyD, LP

Heather Gallivan has worked in the field of eating disorders as a clinical psychologist for 20 years providing all levels of care to all eating disorder diagnoses in individuals of all ages, genders, cultural backgrounds, and body sizes. She also have years of experience giving presentations to mental health professionals, healthcare professionals, educators, students, community groups, and speaking to the media about eating disorders, treatment, prevention as well as related topics on body image, social media and body image and health behavior change. It is her passion to teach others and to increase awareness in hopes of recognizing individuals struggling with eating disorders sooner and getting them the care they need.
