55. Buds glabrous or nearly so; buds round in cross-section; very rare in Wisconsin, barely reaching north to extreme southern Wisconsin in Grant county, along the Mississippi River.

55. Buds pubescent, at least at the tip; buds 5-angled in cross-section; distributions various; our common species are found in dry habitats, the rare Q. coccinea is reported in moist sites in the few Wisconsin locations for which it is known outside of cultivation.
