| Sorbus americana has compound, alternate leaves and dark reddish, sticky buds. The small flowers are white and crowded into much-branched inflorescences. The berry-like fruits are actually pomes (the same form as an apple) and are a bright red. See the key for help in distinguishing among the 3 species of Sorbus in Wisconsin. Sorbus americana reaches its southwestern range limit in Wisconsin and is found mostly in the northern half of the state. It is not common.
