The leaves of Pyrus communis are simple, alternate and toothed and the upper surface is often dark green and shiny when mature. The flowers are similar to Malus pumila, with 5 conspicuous white petals.

Pyrus communis is far less commonly planted in Wisconsin then is Malus pumila and it rarely escapes near plantings.
