Hudsonia tomentosa is a low, spreading shrub of very dry, sandy, often disturbed sites of low productivity. They are most common in the counties near the shores of Lake Superior and in southern Wisconsin in the barrens near the Wisconsin River. The leaves are very small, scale-like structures similar to the leaves of Junipers.
