Key to Selaginella

1. Sterile leaves four ranked and of two types, with larger leaves on two opposing sides of the stem and smaller leaves on the other 2 sides; larger leaves less than 2 mm long, bright, light green; usually in moist, sunny and often calcareous sites; spores borne in flattened strobili near the tip of the stems, each strobilus not much different from the rest of the stem.

1. Sterile leaves spirally arranged and of only one type; larger leaves longer than 2 mm, color and habitats as described below; strobili either 4- angled (squarish) or round in cross-section. 2
