8. Horizontal stems creeping along the surface of the soil, upright stems therefore obviously connected; conspicuous constrictions along the branches; leaves on lower upright shoots spreading, 5-8 mm long. |

8. Horizontal stems below ground, each upright
stem thus appearing as a separate individual; lacking conspicuous constrictions
on the branches; leaves on lower uprght stems tightly appressed to stem,
or if spreading then less than 4.5 mm long. The following three species
were long considered to be varieties of L. obscurum. They are separated
by subtle characters and any individual plant can be difficult to place.
