Botrychium minganense is another of the small moonwort species. The blade is less than 2.5 cm wide and often less than 10 cm tall, although the fertile branch may exceed it significantly in length, bringing the height of large fertile plants to about 20 cm. Most plants are much smaller. The pinnae of B. minganense are variable from slightly fan-shaped to nearly round, but are never broadly fan-shaped nor overlapping as in B. lunaria. Some intermediate plants of B. minganense, B. lunaria and B. spathulatum may be difficult to place, however.

B. minganense is widely distributed from Alaska fully across Canada and south in the Rocky mountains to Arizona, but is limited to only the northernmost tier of states in the rest of the U.S. In Wisconsin the range is limited to northern Door County and to scattered locations in the northwestern counties. It is listed as a "special concern" species in Wisconsin.
