Fertile and sterile fronds of Asplenium pinnatifidum are
similar and often less than 15 cm long. The blade is pinnatifid
(deeply lobed, but not fully pinnate). Sori are elongate and are
not marginal.
The main range of Asplenium pinnatifidum is from Pennsylvania
and New Jersey south to northern Georgia and Alabama, west to
Missouri and Arkansas. There are also a few disjunct populations,
including the several Wisconsin sites in Iowa County in the southwestern
portion of the state. It is found primarily on acidic rocks. A.
pinnatifidum is listed as "threatened" in
Wisconsin.
