Early meadow-rue is a forest plant of spring, flowering in (late April-) May and reaching a height of about 2 feet. Each flower has only male (stamens) or female parts (pistils), and each plant has only one type of flower, therefore each plant is either male or female. Such species are said to be dioecious. The alternate leaves are compound, often 2-3 times divided.
