Andropogon gerardii is a large grass to 6-8 feet tall. The inflorescence forms several elongate axes from (or near) a common base, somewhat resembling a large bird's foot and inspiring the name "turkey-foot". It is found in sunny sites on sandy soils throughouot the state, from prairies in the south to clearings, roadsides and railroad rights-of-way in the north.
