Master of Public Administration Admissions

1 Admission Requirements

Each student’s prior academic background and professional experience (when applicable) is evaluated by the UW-Green Bay program director. Students who show exceptional promise but lack the minimal prerequisites may be admitted provisionally. Applicants are not required to take the GRE for admission.

Minimum admission to the Master of Public Administration program requires:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  2. A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) based on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Students applying to the accelerated degree must complete either Introduction to Public Administration or Introduction to Nonprofits as well as four upper-level courses from the list below and have received a B or better in each course to be eligible:
    • Human Resource and Risk Management
    • Public and Nonprofit Program Evaluation
    • Geographic Information Systems
    • Cost-Benefit Analysis
    • Environmental Politics and Policy
    • Regulatory Policy and Administration
    • Philanthropy
    • State and Local Government
    • Urban Politics and Policy
    • Fundraising and Marketing for Nonprofits
  4. Applicants for the executive track should have 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in the public or nonprofit sector.

2 How to Apply

  1. Complete the UW-Green Bay graduate application form and pay the $56 application fee.
  2. Send official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions of higher learning from which 9 or more credits have been attempted. If you attended less than 9 credits you do not have to send an official transcript unless the courses completed were prerequisites for the program. Study abroad transcripts are not required if a student attended an international university for one or fewer semesters. NOTE:If you attended UW-Green Bay, you do not have to send UW-Green Bay transcripts.
    1. Electronic transcripts can be sent to: uwgb@uwgb.edu. 
    2. Hard copy transcripts can be mailed to: UW-Green Bay Admissions, 2420 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay, WI 54311.
  3. Submit two letters of evaluation or recommendation. At least one academic reference is preferred, especially for students enrolled in the traditional or accelerated track. Please have each person who is submitting a recommendation on your behalf complete this evaluation form. Each completed evaluation form must come directly from the reference and be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies email, gradstu@uwgb.edu. The Office of Graduate Studies will not accept letters submitted by the applicant.
  4. Write a personal statement(Maximum of 1000 words) describing the following information:
    1. Your interest in working in the public and nonprofit sector, your professional goals as they relate to this interest, and how you believe UW-Green Bay’s Master of Public Administration program can help you achieve these goals.
    2. Your admission type (traditional, accelerated or executive) and which track (public or nonprofit management).
      1. If applying for the executive option, include your resume in your application or send in an email to gradstu@uwgb.edu.
    3. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for the program, please include a description of extenuating circumstances to explain why your application does not accurately reflect who you are as a student and your ability to succeed in a graduate program.
