September 4: Arranged (USA 2007)
Rochel is an Orthodox Jew, and Nasira a Muslim of Syrian origin. They are both young teachers at a public school in Brooklyn, but also have something else in common - they are going through the process of getting “arranged marriages” through their respective religious and traditional customs. With both family pressure on the one hand, and the rejection of traditional values by the outside world on the other, Rochel and Nasira will have to rely on each other and their friendship to pull through this difficult time of their lives, striving to be strong women in charge of their own happiness, while keeping their deep religious and cultural convictions.
October 2: Americans Smell Good (USA 2024)
Americans Smell Good combines filmmaker Emir Cakaroz’s story in the U.S.A. with people from different social, racial and ethnic backgrounds that he wouldn’t have met if he hadn’t come to this country. It explores the experience of being in between many cultures when living in a foreign land. Cakaroz is a Turkish documentary filmmaker who teaches at UW-Milwaukee. He received his BA and MA degrees in Cinema and Television at Anadolu University in Turkey and will join us afterwards via Zoom for a live Q&A.
November 6: The Orange Thief (USA/Italy 2007)
Living on the outer boundaries of society, the eponymous orange thief and some other country-wise ruffians steal fruit for sustenance, sale and the sheer excitement of courting danger. After the thief ends up in a Sicilian jail, his life takes an unexpected turn when his bunkmate, Turrido, promises him a deal: get Turrido's ex-lover Rosalba to make a recording of her singing and he will give the thief a piece of land of his own. The film garnered acclaim for being written and shot in one month by a group of American and Italian actors.
Co-Sponsored by the Italo-American Club.
December 4: Transit (Germany 2018)
Based on the novel by Anna Seghers, Transit is a fascinating blend of past and present drawing parallels between the refugee situation of today and of the past. In 1942, Georg attempts to flee France, after its invasion by the Nazis. He assumes the identity of a dead author, but soon finds himself stuck in Marseilles, where he falls in love with Maria, a young woman searching for her missing husband.
