Challenge Exams

If you have strong knowledge in a subject area that isn’t covered by standardized exams (like CLEP or DSST), you may be eligible to earn credit through a Challenge Exam. These exams are designed by UW-Green Bay faculty to test your understanding of a specific course.

Challenge Exam Eligibility

The following rules apply to be eligible to take a challenge exam for a course:

  • Current Students Only: You must be currently enrolled at UW-Green Bay or have been enrolled in the most recent semester in order to challenge a course.
  • Undergraduate & Certificate Only: Only UW-Green Bay students enrolled in undergraduate degree or certification programs are eligible.
  • Not for Prior Courses: Challenge exam credit can only be awarded if the course hasn't already been taken or transferred from another institution.
  • Not for Improving Grades: If you’ve taken a course and didn’t do well, you cannot retake the course through a challenge exam to improve your grade.

Arrange a Challenge Exam

Follow the steps below to arrange a challenge exam:

  1. Choose the Course: Identify the course you want to earn credit for. Refer to the course inventory.
  2. Contact the Instructor: Reach out to the relevant faculty member to check if a Challenge Exam is available for that course. To look up the instructor, search for your course in the schedule of classes. Find their contact information in the directory.
  3. Register for the Exam: To complete the registration form and pay a $100* fee (cash or check), contact Testing Services
  4. Schedule Your Exam: Work with the faculty member to arrange a date for your Challenge Exam.

*$50.00 of the portion of the fee will be paid via salary overload to the faculty member who administers the Challenge Exam.
