Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
At UW-Green Bay, you can earn college credit for the knowledge and skills you’ve gained outside the classroom. This could be from work experience, military service or independent learning. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) recognizes your real-world learning by giving you the opportunity to apply it toward your degree.
How Credit for Prior Learning Works
To qualify for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), knowledge and skills you’ve gained must relate to specific UW-Green Bay courses. It’s important to remember that we award credit for what you’ve learned, not just for what you’ve done. You will need to demonstrate your understanding of the theories and concepts related to the subject. Here are a few key things to know about CPL:
- CPL credit must be tied to a specific course at UW-Green Bay (not general elective credit).
- You cannot earn CPL for a course that’s already on your transcript.
- CPL credits don't count toward the residency requirement for honors or degree programs.
Ways to Earn Credit for Prior Learning
There are several ways you can earn credit through CPL, depending on your background and experiences:
Challenge Exams
If you have deep knowledge in a subject, you may be able to take a challenge exam to earn course credit.
Military Training & Experience
UW-Green Bay awards credit for military training based on recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE). Your military experience could translate into valuable college credits.
Portfolio Option
Build a portfolio that demonstrates your knowledge in a specific subject area. This option is ideal if your experience doesn’t fit neatly into standardized exams but shows significant learning.
Retroactive Credits
If you’ve previously completed advanced coursework (such as in a foreign language), you may be eligible for retroactive credit based on your enrollment in higher-level courses.
Credit by Examination
In addition to Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), UW-Green Bay offers several exam-based credit opportunities. Explore these options for earning credit through standardized exams:
