Preparing for college can be exciting, and maybe a little daunting to plan out. To help you get started, we have compiled a list of essential items that you should consider bringing with you, and those things you should leave at home!

Essentials

These are items we suggest you bring to ensure you can be comfortable while also adding your personality to your space.

  • Extra-long twin sheets
  • Comforter or blankets
  • Pillows
  • Clothing, shoes, luggage
  • Towels & washcloths
  • Bath mats
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Flashlight
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Power strips*
  • Cell phone & charger
  • Laptop computer
  • School supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, etc)
  • Small lockbox
  • Toilet paper

*Only three-prong grounded power strips with circuit breaker allowed.

Additional Items

The following are items you may want to coordinate with your roommate.

  • Television - SpectrumU TV supported streaming device
  • Small refrigerator Energy Star certified, no larger than 2-4 cubic feet
  • Small microwave Energy Star certified
  • Dishes - pots, pans, flatware & utensils
  • Small snow shovel for the trunk of your car (if you bring a car)
  • Cleaning equipment - vacuum cleaner, broom, mop
  • Games & recreational equipment
  • Personal items (pictures, posters, luggage)

What's Not Allowed

While packing, it's important to be aware of the items that are not allowed on campus. The following items are prohibited:

  • Alcohol*
  • Illegal drugs
  • Candles, incense or any open flame
  • Open-coil cooking & heating appliances
  • Electrical appliances of excessive wattage
  • Halogen lamps
  • Two-prong, ungrounded extension cords
  • Weapons, including martial arts weapons
  • Fireworks
  • Flammables (gasoline & propane)
  • Personal bed bunking/lofting equipment
  • Pets**

*Alcohol is not allowed in Residence Halls or in the possession of underage students. It is allowed in apartments for residents of legal drinking age.
**Pets are not allowed, except for non-dangerous fish in an aquarium no larger than 29 gallons and approved emotional support animals.
