As our population continues to age, healthcare will require a new approach to age-friendly care that integrates geriatrics concepts and crosses disciplines to ensure the complex needs of older people are met. Our certificate program offers relevant sections on important topics related to prevention, intervention and advance care planning.

An Aging Milestone
The year 2030 marks an important demographic turning point in U.S. history when all baby boomers will be older than age 65.
This means that in a couple decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history.
Redefine Healthy Aging
Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last century. A longer life can be associated with illness, discomfort, disability and dependency at the end of life. If you are charged with the care of older people, this certificate program could expand the quality of your care:
- A nurse in acute or ambulatory care or currently working in a nursing home or assisted living facility
- A social worker or mental health counselor
- A geriatric care manager or other healthcare employee
Relevant Sections
This certificate encompasses two sections.
Geriatric Fundamentals
Section 1
September 4-October 27, 2024 (8 Weeks)
This section will examine the social, biological and psychological aspects in an aging society along with an overview of medications and mental health issues. Students will be able to identify age-related changes for each of the major body systems and recognize how gerontological care delivery focuses on various age-related changes. Topics covered will include but not be limited to:
- Theories of Aging
- Common Changes in Aging
- Effects of Aging on Key Systems of the Body
- Aging & Mental Health
- Aging Risks
- Holistic Gerontological Care
Living in Harmony with Aging & Chronic Conditions
Section 2
October 28-December 22, 2024 (8 Weeks)
This section will examine the aging process and how chronic conditions and diseases influence the quality of life. This course will describe the unique challenges and goals for older patients living with chronic conditions and how to help your patients and residents achieve the goal of maintain a high quality satisfying life and to not be controlled by the disease. Topics covered will include but not be limited to:
- Effects of Aging on Medication Use
- Chronic Conditions & Older Adults
- Comfort & Pain Management
- Rehabilitative & Restorative Care
- Long Term Care
- End of Life Care
